Perfect Steamed Mashed Potatoes

2–3 lbs Russet or Yukon Gold potatoes

1–2 tsp salt (plus more to taste)

4–6 tbsp butter

½–¾ cup heavy cream or milk (warm)

Black pepper, to taste

Optional: roasted garlic, chives, parsley

Prep the Potatoes

Peel potatoes.

Cut into evenly sized chunks.

Steam

Place chunks in a steamer basket over simmering water.

Cover and steam for 15–20 minutes, until fork-tender.

Mash

Transfer to a large bowl.

Mash with a potato masher, fork, ricer, or food mill until desired texture.

Add Flavor

Stir in butter, warm cream or milk, salt, and pepper.

Add extras like garlic or herbs if desired.

Serve

Spoon into a warm dish, garnish, and serve immediately.
